In Chetumal I was lucky to couch surf with Maria and her family. Maria took me for a day tour taking in her FOUR TOP THINGS TO DO IN CHETAMAL.
Number Two on her list was a visit to the Mayan Ruins of Oxtankah, about 16 km’s north of Chetumal. Oxtankah appears to have been built in the early classic period (200-600AD) and is unique in that it features pyramids that also double as tombs.
I’ve visited a lot of Mayan Ruins and what was unique about Oxtankah is that I had the whole site completely to myself! After the crazy crowds of Tulum, and the fences restricting access, it was refreshing to visit a site where I could explore unhindered.
