It’s been nearly a year since I unceremoniously ended my 21 month journey around Asia and Central America. The journey, which took in 16 countries really gave me, in particular, a better understanding of Australia’s place in Asia.
And this is why I do it, I need to see and understand the world, and unfortunately, can’t rest until I’ve at least known each continent!
I was planning to ride a motorbike around West Australia, the only part of Australia I haven’t seen. When I cooked the bike I had bought for the trip, doing this ride, I decided West Australia can wait! I felt a strong desire to finish what I’d started in the America’s, and I’ve earmarked May as the time this journey will start, about a month from now!
Things have changed a lot in the last year. I no longer believe relying on youtube ad revenue is a sustainable business model, and I’m not the only one! A clever video producer will use youtube as a means to market their work and try and cultivate direct relationships with advertisers and/or use youtube to drive traffic to some product they sell. Within the travel industry there are some great examples of how this can work.
In the last year I’ve been doing a lot of corporate video production, including working as the chief videographer for the world’s most sustainable winery, New Zealand’s Yealands Estate. It has been a great experience working with a growing corporate, open to allowing their team to tell their story. We’ve turned out 65 videos whereby staff, from the CEO to the chief gardener, tell the story of how Yealands incorporates their ‘Think Boldly, Tread Lightly and never say it can’t be done’ ethos into all they do.
My favourite video is the one below where Yealands founder, Peter Yealands discusses the unique soil structure of their Seaview Vineyard. Peter is a busy man and doesn’t always enjoy being in front of camera. I realised that if I put him on camera with someone else, he would forget the camera and perform better, and this video is testament to that!
My work with Yealands has made me aware of my unique skills as a video producer; I can work fast, turning out videos to tight deadlines and I know how to get the best out of on camera performers. I’ve also leant that working with a team can lead to a better product in the end. And most of all, it has been great not having to appear on camera myself. So how that changes my style on this next trip, who knows!
I know personally, sustainability has become a huge interest of mine; growing my own food, researching eco-friendly house designs and exploring the growing electric motorcycle industry. I’m sure given this passion, these will be some of the stories I search out on this next journey!
At the moment all that I have planned is a flight from Melbourne to Los Angeles. I like traveling this way, no plans, open schedule, seeing where the road takes me. Some people can’t fathom this way of traveling, but for me it leaves room to seize opportunities in the moment, like my chance to sail to Cuba.
Some ideas include a road trip across America down to Miami exploring the deep south, sailing the Caribbean, motorcycle diaries though Sth America. Looking forward to sharing some great video stories along the way.
